Whether you are looking for a new job or planning to apply for a higher post within your current company, having a well-written CV with an attractive design goes a long way in making that first impression. We have often come across people who wish to try for a new job but keep postponing it due to the tedious task of writing/upgrading their CVs. Here are the 10 steps to write an effective CV.

    1.       Download an attractive resume design from the many templates available online.

2.       Write your full name, current designation(s) and contact details at the top of the resume. Visa details, driver’s license information and social media details may be included. Attaching a photo is effective though not mandatory.

3.       Make a list of your updated skills and capabilities. For example, Strong Communication Skills, Leadership Skills, etc can be added in general and Strong Analytical skills and Microsoft Skills can be used for job specific skills. The key is to be relevant to your field of work and the job role that you wish to apply for. This is an important part of the CV that enhances searchability by employers.

4.       Write a clear, concise and optimistic bio for the Personal Profile section. Ideally, this section is between 100-300 words, with the word count directly proportional to your years of experience and capabilities.

5.       Summarize your achievements, awards and honours, expertise and top qualifications under the Key Accomplishments section.

6.       Under Work Experience, mention the company name, job position, duration of job role, and location for each job role, followed by a bulleted review of all work undertaken.

7.       Organize your educational qualifications under the Education section including name of the course, name and location of the institute, duration of the course and GPA (if relevant).

8.       Under Courses and Certificates section, you may add any certifications done for the purpose of upskilling.

9.       Add any hobbies and public service activities under the Hobbies section.

10.   Proofread the CV for any errors, spelling mistakes or date anomalies. Fix the formatting if required.
